interview with mike davis about London, LA, and other cities at our strange moment, at times getting downright foucauldian — "So the internet gets to threaten freedom because of the way in which we can all surveil, oppress and jail each other: we are all prison guards now, watching each others' movements. This is a frightening idea and the right-wing loves it, having some role to play in the policing of immigration and society. Everyone wants to wear a badge in some sense." :: h/t jane dark

an interesting, incisive review of two new books by zizek — 'What Zizek really believes about America and torture can be seen in his new book, Violence, when he discusses the notorious torture photos from Abu Ghraib: "Abu Ghraib was not simply a case of American arrogance towards a Third World people; in being submitted to humiliating tortures, the Iraqi prisoners were effectively initiated into American culture." Torture, far from being a betrayal of American values actually offers "a direct insight into American values, into the very core of the obscene enjoyment that sustains the U.S. way of life." This, to Zizek's many admirers, is more like it.'

erin macleod runs down the year in reggae, noting dancehall's "cinematic" turn :: "The melancholy, sweeping, and spooky strains of cinematic dancehall (seriously, someone needs to use this stuff in a gangster movie) had its day in 2008." :: one part hip-hop, one part hollywood, this year's crop of bombastic, film-cliche riddims calls attn to dancehall's concern with larger-than-life images (even when only seen in the imagination, seen) :: or should we say, “obscene enjoyment”?
