This is my new favorite thing in the world, and somehow it makes it make more sense that Luanda is the most expensive city on the planet. Sure is rich anyway (here’s a little background, fyi) —
/big tip of the proverbial hat to Farrah Jarral, whose awesome voice I first encountered on Keysound’s classic 00s London mosaic, Margins Music, which I still owe a massive big-up/break-down of a post…
did you see that there’s a conference on kuduro happening in luanda at the end of may?
should be great for anyone in the area

whoa, amazing!
i’ll let you know how it goes, lots of great people presenting
plz do! i’m impressed this is happening.
I saw the lady in action at the Viradão Carioca (Rio All-Nighter), a Paris/Montreal Nuit Blanche take off, where she was given at 8 pm (really early by Rio time) slot on the stage that was an hour and a half train ride from downtown. Way way way out. She still brought it down and had us all dancing “olha boneco” and “chão chão chão.” I talked to some folks at the Angolan Consulate here in Rio about it today and will hopefully be putting something together for Cluster.
I’m also trying to disentangle the double entendres in her lyrics — gender in language is frustrating when you’re a novice Portuguese student and genius when you’re a transvestite Angolan kuduro MC. Will report back.
wowza, greg — let me just say that i look forward to any and all reports back!
