Wow, hammond fire. That jive sample is going to be in every blog mix for the next month or two.
Ethel Smith: Weird Organ Lady or Mondo Organista?
This touches on a subject I’ve been trying to background (without much success) for a potential future blog post: the very strange categories and dance styles in DanceSport. Specifically for this post, how on earth did jive end up in a “Latin” category (and the tango in the standard)? I’m fascianted by the choice of dances, the “imagery” and “character” associated with each etc. etc.
I think “jive” is a pretty free-floating (if racy) signifier in the case of the video. I have no idea how these dances were named and standardized and categorized by these dance orgs, though. Definitely interesting. It’s worth noting that “Latin” dances have long been a part of the ballroom repertory. Maybe perreo will one day take its place alongside the tango and other formerly forbidden dances.
