It was a wild &#038; windy ride, but the payoff was an <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.flickr.com\/photos\/wayneandwax\/8616249471\/in\/photostream\/\">incredible vista<\/a> and some good, heavy vibes. It was a <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.flickr.com\/photos\/wayneandwax\/8616249051\/\">serious system<\/a>, frequently exploited by the selectors who mostly withheld the massive bass for maximum effect. And when it dropped, <em>bomba&#8230;<\/em> While we were there, and this is hardly surprising, we were treated to an Italian guest selector wielding a single turntable (and the mixer &#038; airhorn, of course), playing tracks with lines like &#8220;African or British, Italian, Japanese \/ it&#8217;s important that we share in love and harmony.&#8221; Amazingly, I found the session <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ustream.tv\/recorded\/30068334\">archived on Ustream<\/a>!  &#8212;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wayneandwax\/8616245887\/\" title=\"rastagate by wayneandwax, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8383\/8616245887_c20b0daeae.jpg\"  width=\"600\"  alt=\"rastagate\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wayneandwax\/8616246755\/\" title=\"kingston dub club by wayneandwax, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8111\/8616246755_5e3375cc69.jpg\"  width=\"600\"  alt=\"kingston dub club\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But we only got a couple nights in town. Most of our time was spent up in Portland at a far more leisurely pace. When we finally made it to the other side of the island, after threading mountain turns for a few hours, the first thing I saw was some graffiti nodding north &#038; repping the THUG LIFE (G-UNOT!) &#8212; <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wayneandwax\/8616264703\/\" title=\"G-UNOT by wayneandwax, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8382\/8616264703_bf859841eb_z.jpg\" width=\"600\" alt=\"G-UNOT\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We stayed in an amazing place called the Belmount, an exquisite little spot on the San San peninsula, overlooking the Blue Lagoon, Monkey Island, and San San Beach &#8212;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wayneandwax\/8616271105\/\" title=\"monkey island, blue lagoon by wayneandwax, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8123\/8616271105_91760ab218.jpg\"  width=\"600\"  alt=\"monkey island, blue lagoon\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pretty sweet at sunset too &#8212;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wayneandwax\/8617756834\/\" title=\"g'night! by wayneandwax, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8255\/8617756834_80ac4cdf7c.jpg\"  width=\"600\"  alt=\"g'night!\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s from the other side of the house\/peninsula &#8212;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wayneandwax\/8570867631\/\" title=\"MARNIN' by wayneandwax, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8238\/8570867631_79279b8d46.jpg\"  width=\"600\" alt=\"MARNIN'\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And don&#8217;t get me started on the plantings <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.flickr.com\/search\/?q=flower+AND+jamaica&#038;w=37701355%40N00\">and flowers<\/a> and such. But I will share one great moment: on one walk around the yard, I noticed a flower that had been choked by a small vine, so I snapped the vine and gently unraveled it and the flower opened right up, as if in some act of magical gratitude &#8212;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wayneandwax\/8617446944\/\" title=\"i noticed this flower was entwined by a vine by wayneandwax, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8544\/8617446944_07cf69fe22_z.jpg\"  width=\"600\" alt=\"i noticed this flower was entwined by a vine\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wayneandwax\/8617450324\/\" title=\"jamaican flowers # by wayneandwax, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8104\/8617450324_7a77f5cd6d_z.jpg\"  width=\"600\" alt=\"jamaican flowers #\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Belmount is just down the road from Frenchman&#8217;s Cove, so we spent a couple days in the special spot where the cool river meets the warm sea and a swing hangs from an almond tree at just the right height &#8212;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wayneandwax\/8616287605\/\" title=\"charlie &amp; charlie by wayneandwax, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8106\/8616287605_c35dea0d26_z.jpg\"  width=\"600\" alt=\"charlie &amp; charlie\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wayneandwax\/8617395954\/\" title=\"nico swingo by wayneandwax, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8394\/8617395954_150c498bb5_z.jpg\"  width=\"600\" alt=\"nico swingo\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, we also pilgrimaged to Winnifred Beach, maybe the most perfect natural beach I&#8217;ve ever seen, so well captured in this epic panorama shot by Sara &#8212;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wayneandwax\/8635461406\/\" title=\"winnifred in panorama by wayneandwax, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8387\/8635461406_265cc86e8d_z.jpg\" width=\"600\" alt=\"winnifred in panorama\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, we had to stop for some post-beach jellies (&#038; about a dozen other fruits during the week) &#8212;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wayneandwax\/8617751116\/\" title=\"jelly time! by wayneandwax, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8121\/8617751116_cbd3bffa33.jpg\"  width=\"600\"  alt=\"jelly time!\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wayneandwax\/8616648323\/\" title=\"jelly time! by wayneandwax, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8113\/8616648323_db8020aeec.jpg\"  width=\"600\"  alt=\"jelly time!\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Becca had her first otaheite apple in a decade, and the girls their first ever, so that was sweet &#8212;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wayneandwax\/8616674105\/\" title=\"double-fisting otaheite &amp; guava by wayneandwax, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8531\/8616674105_616f8b17bc_z.jpg\"  width=\"600\" alt=\"double-fisting otaheite &amp; guava\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If only we could plant one of these things up in Cambridge&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wayneandwax\/8616679981\/\" title=\"otaheite seedie by wayneandwax, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8387\/8616679981_356a1b8f9d_z.jpg\"  width=\"600\" alt=\"otaheite seedie\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of all the delicious and <a href=\"http:\/\/wayneandwax.com\/org\/blog\/february\/rn-02-11.html\">alien fruit<\/a> we sought out and encountered, I discovered I&#8217;m a sucker for almonds. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Terminalia_catappa\">Sea almonds<\/a>, I believe. And more the trees than the fruit, which I didn&#8217;t get much a chance to try. (I did bite into a freshly fallen one I found on the beach, which had a tart, pear-ish taste and an almost avocado feel. Pretty good, but it wasn&#8217;t ripe enough.)
