{"id":6967,"date":"2012-11-26T16:53:32","date_gmt":"2012-11-26T20:53:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wayneandwax.com\/?p=6967"},"modified":"2015-01-07T13:35:30","modified_gmt":"2015-01-07T17:35:30","slug":"the-kind-of-drones-we-like-or-a-special-sufi-plug-ins-plug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wayneandwax.com\/?p=6967","title":{"rendered":"The Kind of Drones We Like"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wayneandwax.com\/wp\/images\/sufi-plugins-640-80.jpg\" width=500><\/p>\n<p>Hard to believe the fall semester is already coming to a close, but we&#8217;re going out with a bang in <a href=\"http:\/\/wayneandwax.com\/academic\/Music190r-syllabus.pdf\">Technomusicology<\/a> (see &#038; hear some of our projects <a href=\"http:\/\/wayneandwax.com\/?p=6952\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/wayneandwax.com\/?p=6909\">there<\/a>): Thursday&#8217;s final class session will feature a visit from none other than Jace Clayton, aka <a href=\"http:\/\/www.negrophonic.com\/\">DJ \/Rupture<\/a>, globe-trotting artist, writer, label honcho, three-turntable magician, &#038; one of the finest non-card-carrying technomusicologists in &#8220;the field&#8221;!<\/p>\n<p>Jace will be presenting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beyond-digital.org\/sufiplugins\/\">Sufi Plug Ins<\/a>, his recently launched, semi-<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/1683451334\/beyond-digital-morocco-what-if-the-dj-were-the-ngo\">crowdsourced<\/a>, collaboratively-produced, free (!) audio software \/ art project. As described over at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beyond-digital.org\/sufiplugins\/\">Beyond Digital<\/a>, Sufi Plugs Ins includes <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>four software synthesizers hardwired to North African maqam scales with quartertone tuning built-in, a device called DEVOTION which lowers your computer\u2019s volume 5 times a day during call to prayer (presets include Agnostic, Fervent, Devout), and a drone machine<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now that&#8217;s what I call technomusicology! Check it out &#8212;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/41943354?badge=0\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jace is always very thoughtful (see, e.g., <a href=\"http:\/\/www.negrophonic.com\/2012\/sufi-plug-ins-are-real-demo-video-download\/\">his own post<\/a> on the project), so I&#8217;m quite looking forward to the demonstration &#038; conversation.
