{"id":6255,"date":"2012-02-06T14:54:30","date_gmt":"2012-02-06T18:54:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wayneandwax.com\/?p=6255"},"modified":"2015-01-07T13:37:22","modified_gmt":"2015-01-07T17:37:22","slug":"old-electrical-boxes-other-rituals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wayneandwax.com\/?p=6255","title":{"rendered":"Old Electrical Boxes &#038; Other Rituals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wayneandwax.com\/wp\/images\/EkipRitual_500X500.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve got another promising Boston premiere this week (that&#8217;s Tuesday 2\/7) at <a href=\"http:\/\/beatresearch.com\">Beat Research<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/soundcloud.com\/ekipritual\">Ekip Ritual<\/a> is an ongoing collaboration between &#8220;nordestino&#8221; electro-percussion wiz, <a href=\"http:\/\/soundcloud.com\/kiddid\/\">Kiddid<\/a>, and Brazilian reggae\/alt-pop vocalist <a href=\"http:\/\/soundcloud.com\/massarock\">Massarock<\/a>. Drawing on soundsystem culture, Afro-Brazilian rhythms, and pop music sensibilities, the duo ride the &#8220;global bass&#8221; wave with aplomb. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wayneandwax.com\/wp\/images\/EkipRitual.jpg\" width=600><\/p>\n<p>Listen, say, to &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/soundcloud.com\/ekipritual\/caixas-el-trica-antigas\">Caixas El\u00e9trica Antigas<\/a>&#8221; (that&#8217;s &#8220;Electrical Boxes Old&#8221; according <a href=\"http:\/\/translate.google.com\/#pt|en|Caixas%20El%C3%A9trica%20Antigas\">to Google<\/a>), an apt title given the vintage gleam on the percussion that propels it:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"166\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"http:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F32203524&#038;show_artwork=true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another strong offering, &#8220;Arroxa na Ecurid\u00e3o,&#8221; shows that the vintage-contempo combo goes well beyond gimmickry &#8212; <\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"166\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"http:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F32202969&#038;show_artwork=true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Kiddid has been going pretty deep into some of these sounds recently. Much of what you hear in the tracks above &#8212; despite an uncanny resemblance to time-honored beat-boxes &#8212; are sounds and (virtual) instruments he made himself. A longstanding passion and more recently a vocation, Kidid has been working for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.puremagnetik.com\/\">Puremagnetik<\/a> for the past year, designing instruments for Live, Logic, and Kontakt, including his first big project, released last month: modeled after the Yamaha DX7, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.puremagnetik.com\/index.php?option=com_content&#038;view=article&#038;id=365:deeex&#038;catid=36:current-download&#038;Itemid=161\">DeeEx<\/a> offers access to some classic-sounding 80s-esque synthesis. Apparently, he&#8217;s also just finished a project using the Operator and Analog synths and his designs are being considered for inclusion in Ableton Live 9. <\/p>\n<p>As someone who&#8217;s been using Kiddid&#8217;s killer tracks as secret weapons <a href=\"http:\/\/wayneandwax.com\/?p=2478\">for years now<\/a>, none of that last paragraph comes as a surprise. But it sure whets my appetite for tomorrow&#8217;s show! Yours too?
