{"id":4253,"date":"2010-09-28T09:56:59","date_gmt":"2010-09-28T13:56:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wayneandwax.com\/?p=4253"},"modified":"2015-01-07T13:48:26","modified_gmt":"2015-01-07T17:48:26","slug":"downstairs-bhangra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wayneandwax.com\/?p=4253","title":{"rendered":"Downstairs Bhangra"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/wayneandwax.com\/wp\/images\/rekha-flyer.jpg\" width=\"600\"><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Downstairs Bhangra&#8221; doesn&#8217;t quite have the same ring as &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.djrekha.com\/basementbhangra.html\">Basement Bhangra<\/a>,&#8221; the legendary monthly at SOB&#8217;s that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.djrekha.com\/\">DJ Rekha<\/a> has been holding down since 1997, but I couldn&#8217;t be happier to warm up the crowd for her this Friday at one of Cambridge&#8217;s biggest local venues, downstairs at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mideastclub.com\/\">Middle East<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m looking forward to playing through that big ol&#8217; soundsystem, especially since Rekha has requested that I bring some good dubby vibes to the party. She also tasked me with the interesting challenge of playing stuff &#8220;suggestive of&#8221; but not actually bhangra &#8212; and she noted that dancehall works pretty well. Even so, I&#8217;m not going to be able to resist pulling out a couple classic tracks here and there, especially some seminal early 90s productions by Bally Sagoo, which <a href=\"http:\/\/wayneandwax.com\/?p=98\">still sound to me<\/a> like quasi-proto-reggaeton and which, as early as 1992, seem to prefigure all the various shapes that modern\/pop\/club bhangra would take over the next couple decades. Sometimes in the same song!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wayneandwax.com\/wp\/audio\/Sagoo_92_05.mp3\"><strong>Bally Sagoo, \u201cLut Ke Lae Gayee (Get Mental in The House Mix)\u201d<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n[audio:Sagoo_92_05.mp3]<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m also thrilled that our man <a href=\"http:\/\/dzigamedia.com\/VJDziga.html\">VJ Dziga<\/a> will be providing live visual accompaniment, likely on a Bwood remix tip. Should be a lime.
